Staying Safe on Discord
Setting privacy and safety controls
Discord is a platform where your child can chat with friends and join communities based on their interests, such as gaming. While it can be a fun way to explore shared interests, there can be risks. Understanding the controls available can help you guide your child towards a safer online experience.
How can interactions on Discord affect your child?
Conversations on Discord happen in servers, group chats or private messages.
Even though Discord has safety settings for younger users, your child may still encounter:
Harassment or abusive behaviour
Inappropriate conversations
Radical or extremist content
Because interactions can be anonymous, it may feel more difficult for your child to deal with situations like harassment or suspicious requests. If conversations start to make your child uncomfortable, it may be time to pause and review their settings together.
What are Discord’s default protections for younger users?
The minimum age to create a Discord account in Singapore is 13 years old. Some privacy and safety settings are turned on by default to give younger users aged 13 to 17 extra protection.
Settings to limit interactions with strangers
A warning prompt is triggered when there is a friend request from someone your child may not know
Direct messages from non-friends are sent to a separate folder
Speaking on stage in servers is not available
Filters to reduce inappropriate content
Content settings are set to “Keep Me Safe” to blur sensitive media
Your child does not have access to age-restricted channels, servers and app commands
How can you further protect your child on Discord?
Even with default protections in place, you can add extra safeguards by reviewing settings together and agreeing on what safe usage looks like in your family.
Discuss what your child sees
Review content controls together so that your child views content that is suitable for them. Encourage your child to:
Mute channels and leave servers that do not make them feel good
Go through interactions settings together
Together, review the personal data visible on your child’s account and manage who can interact with them. You and your child can decide on:
Use “Family Centre” to oversee your child’s activity on Discord
"Family Centre" allows you to link your Discord account to your child’s account to manage content, privacy and wellbeing settings directly.
With “Family Centre”, you can also see your child’s activities on Discord, such as:
Their active servers
New friends they added and servers they joined
Their top users and servers
Users they have messaged or called
Their total call duration and purchases in the past seven days
What else can you do when something does not feel right?
Sometimes, certain content or interactions can cause your child to feel uncomfortable and unsafe.
When that happens, let your child know that:
They do not have to respond or explain themselves
Saving screenshots can help if you or your child wants to report harmful behaviour
Blocking or reporting is okay
Talking to you or another trusted adult can help them figure out next steps
Getting support early can prevent things from getting worse
