Staying Safe on Roblox
Setting privacy and safety controls
Roblox is a gaming platform where your child can play games, create games or “experiences”, and interact with others. While it can be a fun way for your child to be creative and socialise, there can be risks. Understanding the controls available can help you guide them towards a safer online experience.
How can interactions on Roblox affect your child?
Interactions on Roblox happen through in-game chats, private messages and user-created "experiences".
Even though Roblox has safety settings for younger users, your child may still encounter:
Harassment, bullying or inappropriate behaviour
Inappropriate conversations
Violent or extremist content or role-play "experiences"
If gaming on Roblox starts to affect your child’s mood or behaviour, it may be time to review their settings with them.
What are Roblox’s default protections for younger users?
Roblox uses age-based accounts to give younger users under 16 years old extra protection:
Roblox Kids account for users aged 5 to 8
Roblox Select account for users aged 9 to 15
These accounts come with safety settings designed to help protect younger users:
Settings to limit interactions with strangers
Communication features are turned off for Roblox Kids accounts
For Roblox Select accounts, your child can use “Experience Chat” and “Party Chat” to chat with others in a similar age group
Filters to reduce inappropriate content
Roblox Kids accounts can only access "experiences" with Minimal or Mild content maturity labels while Roblox Select accounts can access "experiences" with content maturity labels up to Moderate
Roblox Select accounts apply:
Safety filters and chat rephrasing to keep "Experience Chat" conversations safe and age-appropriate
Safety filters for "Party Chat", with filtering becoming less restrictive as your child gets older
How can you further protect your child on Roblox?
Even with default protections in place, you can review settings together and agree on what safe usage looks like in your family. You can also use parental controls to manage your child’s content, privacy and wellbeing settings directly. To do so, you will need to set up a Roblox account with parent privileges and link it to your child’s account.
Discuss what your child sees
Review content controls together so that your child views content that is suitable for them. Encourage your child to:
Change their content maturity settings to “Minimal” to further reduce inappropriate content
Block "experiences" that do not make them feel good
Go through interactions settings together
Together, review the personal data visible on your child’s account and manage who can interact with them. You and your child can decide on:
Who can see their online status and chat with them
Who can join their private server and whose servers they can join
Whether there are users they should block
Support healthy screen habits
Find out about how Roblox makes your child feel and agree on healthy boundaries.
Set daily screen time limits
Check in on how Roblox makes your child feel after long sessions
Encourage breaks if gaming starts to feel overwhelming
What else can you do when something does not feel right?
Sometimes, certain content or interactions may cause your child to feel uncomfortable and unsafe.
When that happens, let your child know that:
They do not have to respond or explain themselves
Saving screenshots or links can help if you or your child wants to report harmful behaviour
Blocking or reporting is okay
Talking to you or another trusted adult can help them figure out next steps
Getting support early can prevent things from getting worse
